Panama approves measures to reactivate tourism

The government has recently approved measures meant to reactivate the tourism industry as well as to boost the economy, including a "master plan for sustainable tourism" from 2020-2025. One of the biggest bets of this plan is the cruise port at Amador, a multimillion-dollar project that hopes to increase tourism. 20 million dollars were approved in May of this year to finish its construction.

The Amador Causeway, named after Panama's first president, is a majestic boardwalk with magnificent views, it stretches two miles into the Pacific Ocean, uniting Panama City with four islands called, Naos, Culebra, Flamenco, and Perico, which is the Island where the cruise port is being built. The Amador Causeway was built in the 20th century with rock and sediments from the Panama Canal, since then the Amador Causeway has become a popular social hub, it is filled with restaurants, bars, hotels, and shops, however, what makes this place stand out are the breathtaking views, that makes you feel like you are in a tropical paradise. The causeway has become a popular destination for joggers, cyclists, and people who enjoy relaxing on a lazy afternoon, it also has great spots for fishing, and offers a quick gateway from the bustling city of Panama without breaking the bank or going too far.

One of the biggest proposals towards reactivating tourism is the cruise port at The Amador Causeway, which already has reservations through 2024 and could be a huge boost to tourism as well as the economy, especially after the covid-19 pandemic left the economy reeling. So far, the cruise port at Amador has 76% work progress, the government hopes to finish this project by the end of the year, some have questioned the validity of funding this project while Panama is not yet over the covid-19 pandemic, however according to the Minister for Maritime Affairs, Noriel Arauz the project needs to be finished before the untreated materials get damaged by the excess salt in the environment. Furthermore, this project will also help directly as well as indirectly in the economic recovery, by providing jobs and boosting tourism, especially in the Amador area.

Another important project at the Amador Causeway is the convention center, this 212-million-dollar construction is a massive 635,000 sq ft building and has a capacity for approximately 25,000 people, and will be the biggest convention center in the region, it has a modern design and the latest technology to host conventions of all kind, this project is meant to solidify Panama as a convention hub, this way Panama can stay competitive not only on when it comes to leisure tourism but also in business tourism. The convention center is set to be inaugurated on August 12th.

Panama must stay competitive when it comes to tourism since the tourism industry represents around 6% of Panama's GDP. However, the tourism industry is set to become even more competitive in coming years due to emerging competitors, that’s why Panama has developed a "master plan for sustainable tourism", which is a comprehensive plan that if successful would ensure a constant and uninterrupted flow of tourist through the years even with strong competition, the master plan would do this by focusing on Panama's rich and diverse natural resources, as well as the quality of its services.
