Medellin – The City of Continuing Innovation

Medellin – The City of Continuing Innovation

In 2013, Medellin Colombia was named the world's most innovative city in a competition organized by the non-profit Urban Land Institute. Once known for being the refuge of the Medellin drugs conglomerates, Medellin beat over 200 cities, including New York and Tel Aviv to gain the prestigious title. The city has certainly been acknowledged for its social innovation, but many people are just now discovering that Medellin plans to be the most technologically advanced city in the world by 2021. Fueled by explosive growth and a desire to transform this dynamic city into an international hub of economic activity and culture, numerous city projects have been launched all across the city. The following are just a few examples why many internationals are drawn to living in Medellin solely for its impressive innovation.

In the very near future, Medellin plans to house a 170 million USD audio-visual facility, with a 5,381 square-foot motion capture studio, six sound stages, two office towers, and a hotel among an array of state-of-the-art amenities. The complex will be located 10 minutes to the east city of the city, enroute to the international airport. This project will encapsulate Medellin's goal to be the most creative city, at least in Colombia.

Various film makers might find the city very likeable due to its Film Commission launched in 2013. At that time, it was announced that producers who spend more than 200,000 US in Medellin would gain access to the 15% rebate that the city is offering. As a matter of fact, Medellin is the only city in Colombia that offers rebates plus the national offers to filmmakers. For example, the film "The 33" starring Antonio Banderas and Juliette Pinoche was the first international film to qualify for the rebates of 40% production and 20% logistical (e.g. transportation, catering, etc.) after national expenses of approximately 600,000 USD. Note that film services for non-national projects must be hired through several Colombian companies, previously registered at the Film Office. To put this into a figure perspective, the 2014 budget cap for total fun was approximately 12 million USD. Let's not forget the fact that just two decades ago, Medellin was the world's most violent city controlled by drug cartels and insecurity.

Not only does Medellin plan to be the most creative city, they also plant to be the most technologically advanced city. The Ruta N's Science, Technology + innovation Plan (CT+i) project excites science aficionados. It is a programme created to promote innovative science and technology projects within the global marketplace. Part of this initiative which is known as "Medellin Space" intends to launch its first aerostatic balloons. Developments with the industry now make it much more economical to set small satellites into the stratosphere to perform crop, border, and geographical studies and management. By way of Ruta N and its cluster programmes, several companies have come and worked together in Medellin and established strategies to achieve aerospace objectives. As a result, they have generated a 2.4 billion USD venue-capital fund for organizations that have the ability to create innovative technological ideas and proposals in this sector. The ultimate goal is make Medellin a leader of the space industry in Latin America. Who knows? Perhaps even space tourism will become a possibility. In fact, Medellin has become one of the leading tech and start-up hubs in all of Latin America.

Known as the City of Eternal Spring, Medellin also possesses the charming beauty and tranquility of the desirable Colombian lifestyle. The city's eagerness to boost the innovation game inspires its residents and enhances their confidence in the city they are living. Sounds like an exciting city to be in, doesn't it?
