How to Set Up Home Internet in Costa Rica
Getting internet access in Costa Rica is pretty much the same as in North America or Europe. In Costa Rica, ADSL is pervasive. Other options are WiMax, cable, 3G and 4G connections. To set up internet connection at home, check out some of the following companies: ICE Group (Kölbi or RACSA), Cabletica, or Tigo (Former Amnet), Costa Rica Wifi, etc. This article should inform you of your options offered by each company.
It costs 1$-2$ to rent the modem, depending on the company. Some companies offer services of free SMS sending by email, such as Kolbi.

RASCA offers internet from 256 Kbp and up to 4 Megas but it is pricier than what other providers charge. Interestingly, RASCA offers open Wifi for free in different spots in Costa Rica, usually libraries, malls, and parks. Options for home internet range between 1Mbps to 6 Mbps download speeds with variations of most packages. They also offer high-speed business services.
The standard requirements to meet before signing the Internet contract are:
- There must be no debts with the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE)
- Present your ID card or passport
- Present a residence certificate
- If applicable, present your retired permit, refugee permit, or other special permit
- A fixed telephone line must be installed already; otherwise, an installation must take place before setting up the Internet
